How to Get Wrinkles Out of a Tutu (After Storage or Shipping)

We've all been there — you pull out that beautiful tutu for picture day or a special event, and it's come out of the box looking a little... flat. Don't panic! Tulle is resilient, and with a few simple tricks, your tutu will be fluffy and fabulous in no time.

Why Tutus Get Wrinkled

Tutus are made from layers of tulle, a lightweight netting fabric. When compressed in a box, bag, or cramped storage space, the layers lose their shape and develop creases. The good news? Tulle responds beautifully to a little steam and gentle handling.

Method 1: Steam It Out (Best for Most Tutus)

Steaming is the gentlest and most effective way to restore a tutu's fluff.

  1. Hang the tutu on a hanger or towel rod in your bathroom.
  2. Run a hot shower and let the steam fill the room for 10–15 minutes. You don't need to get the tutu wet — the humidity does the work.
  3. Gently fluff and shake the layers while they're still warm and steamy.
  4. Let it air dry fully before wearing or storing again.

Tip: A handheld garment steamer works great too — just hold it a few inches away and never press it directly onto the tulle.

Method 2: Shake and Fluff

For minor wrinkles or light compression, sometimes all a tutu needs is a good shake!

  1. Hold the waistband and gently shake the tutu up and down.
  2. Use your fingers to separate and fluff each layer of tulle.
  3. Hang it in an open space and let it rest for a few hours.

Method 2: The Dryer Trick (No Heat!)

If you're short on time, toss the tutu in the dryer on the air-only / no heat setting for 5–10 minutes with a clean, dry towel.

  • The tumbling action helps fluff the tulle layers back up.
  • Never use heat — tulle can melt or warp under high temperatures.

What NOT to Do

  • 🚫 Don't iron tulle — the heat will melt or flatten it permanently.
  • 🚫 Don't wring or twist the fabric.
  • 🚫 Don't put it in the dryer on a heat setting.

How to Store Your Tutu Properly

Prevention is the best cure! Here's how to keep your tutu looking gorgeous between wears:

  • Hang it up on a skirt hanger rather than folding it in a box.
  • If you must store it in a box, place it loosely with tissue paper between the layers — never compressed flat.
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to protect the colors.
